The Twitter Transparency Report, which covers July-December 2016 is released. According to report includes content removal requests, tweet and account blocking statistics from governments, Turkey ranked first in content removal requests around the world. Between July and December 2016, Turkey makes 3076 withheld demands to Twitter, of which 844 were court decisions and 2232 were made by government agencies.
Most of the removal requests took placed in 2016
Twitter releases requests for content removal, tweets, and account blocking made by governments and private organizations, twice a year. According to the second half-year report released this week, withhold requests increased in the second half of 2016, but the content rate blocked by Twitter decreased slightly. Only 19% of the removal requests were withheld by Twitter.In the total sum of 2016, Turkey made 5569 withhold requests to Twitter for 23,370 accounts, but only 512 accounts and 3 thousand tweets were withheld by Twitter.
In the last 5 years, Twitter has been asked to remove 9,117 content and 60% of which was made in 2016. As a result of requests to Twitter, 8,133 tweets have been removed since 2012, while 1130 user accounts have been withheld. Compared to other years, in 2016, 23% of the tweets and 45% of the accounts were removed by Turkey’s demands and Twitter’s compliance.
More than half of the withhold requests are from Turkey
According to 2nd Twitter Transparency Report the in 2016, Turkey claimed 3076 requests and this figure corresponds to 51% of total removal requests. Aside from Turkey, France is the 2nd country in the report by implementing 1334 removal requests. Turkey, followed by Russia with 522 withhold requests.
Turkey targeting verified reporters in Twitter
Another point that draws attention from the report is that Turkey targets verified journalists and media outlets by Twitter. In the second half of 2016, Twitter was only restricted to access only 15 tweets and 14 accounts while Turkey filed 77 withhold demands for the verified “blue ticked” accounts.
In Total, Turkey is the world champion of making withhold request
The reports released from 2012 to 2016 indicates that Turkey made 44% more removal requests than the closest country which is Russia with 4080 requests. Especially since 2014, Turkey is the world leader in tweet withhold and account removal requests. Turkey is followed by Russia, France, England, and Germany in the reports.
